Those of you who’ve read a Head First book probably know what a book with that name will provide – a visually enhanced classic format designed for the way your brain functions. Head First Design Patterns is a similar book developed using the latest research and studies in learning theory, neurobiology, and cognitive science.
Head First Design Patterns from O’Reilly, written by Eric Freeman, Elisabeth Robson, Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates, aims at loading and sticking the patters into your brain. Like other Head First book, it is very simple to read, and what’s in the book is presented in such a way that it lets you put them to work immediately.

Head First Design Patterns is designed in such a way that it makes you more confident at solving software design problems, understanding the patterns, taking advantage of the best practices and knowledge of others, and speaking the patterns’ language with with friends. There are few things you should know before reading this Head First Book. First thing, this book nor any other book covers each and every Design Pattern ever created. The book focuses on the original GoF patterns, and makes sure you deeply understand how to understand and implement them. Additionally, a brief review of other patterns have been provided in the book.
Simple UML-like diagrams are included in Head First Design Patterns. There are tons on exercises and activities in the book, and don’t take them as just add-ons – don’t skip these exercises as they are the part of the fundamental content of the book. Crossword puzzles are also included, but these are just optional.
Head First Design Patterns was ranked at number 17 in the list of Top 50 Books of 2004, Book Pool. It also won the 2005 Jolt Product Excellence Award, General Category in March, 2005.
