Now, as the economy reopens, a lot of people are realizing that while they’ve spent much of their professional lives doing routine office work, they can now pursue the career they’ve always wanted. And they’re looking for help getting there.

The first step to finding a mentor is to figure out who you want to become. I’m currently learning HTML and CSS on my own, but I have an idea of what I want to be able to do when I’m finished. I’m planning to study journalism, and that means working with visual media. I’ve identified my next steps and am working through the process of becoming a professional. If you want to become a journalist, what steps will you take? Who should you meet? How can you find mentors to help you get there?

When I look at my career goals, I see myself working in newsrooms, writing and editing stories, and covering the events happening around me. I have a plan for the first part of that, and I’m meeting with people in my local community to learn what they do and how they got to where they are. When I ask them, they’ll tell me about how they got started, what their day-to-day tasks are, and how they got into their jobs. Then I’ll follow up with some questions. What would you do if you had no experience? What were the biggest challenges you faced when you were just starting out? What are the things that keep you from moving forward?

As I’ve talked to more people about their jobs, I’ve noticed a few themes. Many of them start their career in entry-level positions, but quickly rise up the ranks. They often move from their home state to another state and then to a larger city. The reason they’re doing this is that they have a passion for their job. For example, I’ve talked to several people who work in local newsrooms, and they all love being journalists. They can see the value of reporting on the events happening around them. When they were growing up, their parents made it clear that this was their career choice.

So who do you want to become? Look at what you want to accomplish, and then talk to others in your industry. Find out what the jobs are like, and then find a way to make it happen. You don’t need to know what you want to do yet. The more you learn, the more you’ll discover what you’re passionate about.

Once you have an idea of what you want to do, you can start searching for mentors to help you learn the skills you need. There are plenty of opportunities to connect with people in your area. For example, you might find that a local journalism program has a mentorship program, or that a university has a class that meets online. You can also check with a local business to see what they’re offering in terms of training.

Or, you may be able to find someone who teaches courses in your area. If there isn’t anything like that nearby, you can search online. There are tons of resources that you can use to connect with other people in your field.

You can also look for a mentor outside of your local area. The internet is full of opportunities. Search the website of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), and you’ll find a list of over 200 career resources.

There are also plenty of places that you can look for mentors. For example, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Workforce Information Program (WIP) hosts a mentoring resource called the MentorOne network. It’s a nationwide program that connects people who are seeking mentors with those who are available to help.

WIP also has a mentoring directory where users can post information about their needs and what they’re looking for. It’s a great place to find a mentor who has the skill set you’re seeking.

Another good place to look for a mentor is the online community called LinkedIn. This is a networking tool that can be used to connect with professionals in your area, and it’s a great way to ask questions, share information, and connect with others.

In addition, there are countless local groups on Facebook that are devoted to topics like mentorship, coding, and career development. Search for these groups, and then ask to join if you’d like to connect with others.

Finally, remember that you don’t have to wait until you’re ready to make a change in your career. Start as soon as possible, and you’ll have the opportunity to grow as you go.
